A Roman gold and turquoise pendant necklace, Roman Imperial Period, ca 1st -2nd century CE

This graceful ancient gold earring element is set with a fine turquoise stone, later adapted as a pendant and suspended from a modern 18K yellow gold adjustable chain. The Roman component shows the elegant proportions and refined metalwork associated with personal adornment of the Imperial era, while the vivid turquoise adds a bright accent that would have signaled taste and status. Thoughtfully reset for contemporary wear, the mount preserves the character and integrity of the original piece.

Background: In the Roman world, jewelry served both as a symbol of identity and social status as well as an ornament. Gold was the preferred prestige metal, crafted into lightweight yet durable shapes using hammering, wirework, and soldering. Colored stones were highly valued; garnet, emerald, and pearls were the most common, while turquoise (likely sourced in antiquity from regions like Sinai and Iran) was prized for its unique blue-green hue. The tradition of thoughtfully reworking classical elements into modern designs has a long history, especially from the 19th century onward, enabling ancient gems and ornaments to be appreciated and worn while emphasizing their historical significance.

Condition: Ancient pendant in very good condition with minor surface wear and small age-related abrasions consistent with burial and antiquity. Turquoise with natural inclusions and slight surface irregularities that do not detract. Modern chain is new and in excellent condition, with a secure clasp and a silicone bead for easy adjustment. An elegant, wearable example of Roman jewelry, sensitively adapted for today while honoring its ancient origins.

Provenance: K.S. collection, UK, formed in the 1970s-1980, and then by inheritance to the present owner.
