This black-glazed pottery guttos is typical of the designs produced during the 4th century BC in Magna Graecia and the Mediterranean area. Used for holding oil, usually olive oil for filling lamps, it central medallion of the head of Apollo, frontal face with full curly hair and dangling tendrils, framed with a geometric scroliate border. The disc-shaped body with ribbed sides has an applied loop handle at the side, and a high trumpeting spout with ribbed rim projects below the face. Stands on pedestal foot with a reserved band and relief ridge, rest of body with dark metallic glaze.
Condition: Complete, with a few very minor rim flakes and a small chip to the foot rim that does not detract, the spout has been reattached with minor cosmetic restoration over the break line.
