Of the finest quality, this fabulous sardonyx bead was hand-carved to make the most of the intrinsic decorative pattern of white bands that characterize the fiery orange/red of the stone. Of barrel-shaped form, the pendant has been re-strung for wearing with a modern adjustable chain of 18K white gold.

For a related example see: The Royal city of Susa: Ancient Near Eastern Treasures in the Louvre. New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1992, p.249 #176.

Condition: The pendant is intact and in excellent condition overall. It is re-strung as a necklace on a modern 18K white gold chain that can be adjusted up to 18 inches.

Dimensions: Bead length: 3/4 inch (1.9 cm).

Provenance: Private English collection, acquired from the trade in the early 1970s.
