This gorgeous ancient Mayan apple green jade disc, most probably originally an ear spool, is set in a modern custom-made ring of 22K gold, by famous designer Noma Coply.  The beautifully designed setting is very wearable, and makes the perfect gift!

The Mayans esteemed jade not only for its preciousness and beauty but also as a stone of great symbolic import. They ascribed a number of meanings to jade, including maize, centrality, and rulership, as well as a material embodiment of wind and the vitalizing breath soul. Because of its close relationship to the breath spirit, jade was an important component of funerary rites and the ritual conjuring of gods and ancestors. Jade earspools were considered supernatural sources or passageways for the breath spirit.

Condition: The jade disc is intact and in excellent condition overall. Set in a 22K sold gold ring.

Dimensions: US ring size 6 (UK=M 1/2, DE=16.5, CH=12 3/4)

Provenance: Maya jade with gold ring made by Noma Coply (1916 – 2006) an American fine arts jeweler and art collector noted for her contributions to Surrealist practices and activities. From 1953 through 1968, she was married to William Copley and, with him, helped to acquire one of the largest collections of Surrealist paintings and sculpture in America. In 1954, they established the William and Noma Copley Foundation (subsequently renamed the Cassandra Foundation), a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the creative arts. According to a 1975 article in New York Magazine, she "emerged from the Paris world of surrealist painters five years ago to become one of New York's most original jewelry designers." She was best known for jewelry works that represented ordinary objects such as zippers, buttons, pins, and pencils that she cast in gold, as well as incorporating the ancient art of granulation into contemporary works. A review of her work in the Los Angeles Times described her “Pop-surreal” jewelry as consisting of “beautifully wrought objects that reflect not only wit and sophistication but a highly individualistic spirit." This gorgeous ring is no exception.
