A lovely banded agate intaglio carved with a helmeted profile of the goddess Athena facing left, set in an antique 18K gold ring.

Finger rings were worn widely by Roman men and women.  Gold rings were a badge of rank for equestrians, and rings with carved stones were used to seal documents.  Others were magic charms to ward off bad luck.

Dimensions: US ring size 8 (UK=Q, DE=18, CH=17 3/4, FR=57 3/4, JP=16)

Condition: Chip to the upper edge of the intaglio that does not detract, otherwise intact and in very good condition overall.

Provenance: Private East Coast collector, acquired prior to 1979.
