A large and most handsome redware oil lamp covered in a deep orange-red slip, with a round body, large pinched handle at the back, and elongated nozzle with large wick hole, sitting on a round base, the sloping shoulders with a geometric motif between incised lines, the concave discus decorated with a Chi-Rho symbol between two filler holes.

The Chi Rho (/ˈkaɪ ˈroʊ/; also known as Chrismon or sigla) is one of the earliest forms of Christogram, formed by superimposing the first two (capital) letters—chi and rho (ΧΡ)—of the Greek word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Christos) in such a way that the vertical stroke of the rho intersects the center of the chi.

Condition: The lamp is intact and in very good condition overall.

Dimensions: Length: 5 1/8 in (13 cm)

Provenance: Private Collection of Victor Pafundi (1949 - 2018), Florida, acquired in the 1980s.
