This style of wide-shouldered, double-handled, high-necked jar with black painted geometric designs and banded handles is typical for the early Bronze Age Xindian culture. The mouth is slightly flaring, the base flat and there is a geometric decorative motif on the neck. The wide shoulder features large semi-abstract intertwined snakes facing one another about a tapering body.

While painted wares such as this one are commonly found in the Xindian culture, they differ markedly in quality from the earlier Neolithic painted wares of northwest China, famed for their relatively thin walls, fine clays, and exuberant painted decor. Xindian painted wares are coarsely tempered, thick-walled, and often painted with slip; they show a decorative repertoire simpler than that of other cultures in the same region.

Medium: Clay

Dimensions: Height: 8 3/4 inches (22.2 cm), Width: 7 1/2 inches (19.05 cm)

Condition: Complete with scattered wear to the painted decoration. Both handles reattached with restoration over the break lines, some minor rim roughness.

Provenance: George and Julianne Alderman private collection, Baltimore, MD, acquired mid 1960’s to mid 1990’s.
