The Moche were unique among Andean cultures in their ability to realistically portray the world around them. Although their subject matter can be esoteric, including anthropomorphic demon creatures and deities, there was clearly a genre of realistic representations of animals, fish, birds, and plant forms and scenes of daily life on painted vessels.

This spouted handle vessel of cream, red-brown, gray, and black represents one of three Andean cats: the mountain, pampas, but most probably the puma because of the narrow protruding muzzle. The exceptionally expressive facial features include large, open eyes, perked ears, an open, toothy mouth, and a protruding tongue.
