Die bisher verfügbaren archäologischen Beweise haben gezeigt, dass die frühesten Keulenköpfe zum ersten Mal im Nahen Osten um 8300–6000 v. Chr. auftauchten, zusammen mit der frühen Entwicklung und Ausbreitung der Landwirtschaft. In China wurden Streitkolbenköpfe nur in Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai und West-Shaanxi im Nordwesten Chinas gefunden, was auf den westlichen Ursprung dieser Art von Artefakten hinweist.
