By painting “Mountain Thorny Devil Lizard” Louise is paying homage to the skin of the lizard that changes color in the desert as the sun sets and rises and the dew catches upon its skin. They also use the dew to cool down. Unlike many other larger lizards in the desert areas which are a staple source of iron and protein, the Thorny Mountain Devil is not eaten.

Biography

Working within a long lineage of Aboriginal female painters, Louise Numina Napanangka creates dizzying abstract works that portray the majesty and mystery of the Australian bush. An Anmatyerre artist, she is one of six desert painters known as the Numina Sisters who draw on Indigenous knowledge to create their signature dotted paintings. Napanangka began painting in 1981 under the tutelage of other women artists of the Aboriginal region Utopia —most notably the painters and sisters Gloria Petyarre and Kathleen Petyarre. Like her forebears, Napanangka references native flora in her vibrant works, but her subjects are rooted in ancestral stories and traditions. Napanangka’s paintings are expressions of the artist’s sacred connections to totems, ceremonies, bush medicine, food gathering, and other cultural practices.
