This serene bronze head is from a full-standing figure of the Buddha and exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of the Ayutthaya period in central Thailand. The face is delicately modeled with downcast eyes, arched brows, and a gentle smile reflecting the inner peace of enlightenment and introspection. The elongated earlobes signify the Buddha's renunciation of earthly wealth, while the cranial protuberance (ushnisha) rises into a flame-like finial, a hallmark of Thai sculptural style. The head is covered in small, symmetrical nodes, stylized curls that serve as symbolic representations of the Buddha’s renunciation and spiritual transformation.

Medium: Bronze

Dimensions: Height: 3 3/4 inches (9.5 cm)

Condition: The surface shows a dark, even patina with minor oxidation and light encrustation. The head was cast over a ceramic core, with remnants visible at the break along the lower neck. Very good condition overall.  Mounted on a custom pyramidal wood base.

Provenance: Private Chicago collection, acquired from the NY trade in the 1990s.
