Seldom seen outside a museum, this fantastic mummiform shabti was constructed from Nile silt clay and, unlike most pottery examples, is beautifully modeled and decorated, featuring superb polychrome design.  The long tripartite wig is of Egyptian blue polychrome, while the well-defined face in red/brown has details outlined in black.  The mummiform body of white slip well highlights the defined red details.  This shabti wears a broad collar necklace, his arms are crossed over the chest and feature wrist bracelets, while his hands hold agricultural implements and a rope with seed sack over the right shoulder for work in the afterlife.  Around the body there are six bands of hieroglyphic text in black with a single vertical column on the front legs naming the owner as Chaem-wa-set, Steward/Scribe of the house of Ma'at.

The hand position suggests this shabti is from the Theban area based on shabtis from the tomb of Senedjem.

Condition: Professionally rejoined at the waist, some expected pigment losses that do not detract, loss of pigment to the rear side midsection.  Otherwise, the shabti is complete and in very good condition overall. A fabulous example of type with bright remaining pigment.

Dimensions: Height:  6 1/4 inches (15.9 cm)

Provenance:  Benedict private collection, assembled in the late 1800s, thereafter private Virginia collection, acquired from the European trade in 2009.
