This goddess figure has a circular body completely covered with painted wavy lines, perhaps indicating folds of drapery. Breasts are indicated, although the arms are little more than bulges hanging down at the sides. Her face is pinched into a beak form, with eyes applied as separate slips of clay.
Known as "phi" figurines, these Mycenaean idols are named for their resemblance to shape of the Greek letter "phi." Produced in great numbers, such female figurines have frequently been found in shrines, graves, and occasionally houses. Their symbolism was complex, and their use probably varied according to the circumstances. In general, they are thought to represent goddesses associated with fertility.
