The baboon was closely associated with Thoth, the god of wisdom, science, and measurement.  As Thoth's sacred animal, the baboon was often depicted directing scribes in their work. It is likely that scribes wore such amulets during their lives as a symbol of their god's patronage. This particular amulet is a fine, flat-backed example showing the god in his animal form, depicted in right profile with a massive mane, and squatting with its paws on its knees.
