A finely carved black stone counterbalance from an atlatl (spear-thrower), rendered in the stylized form of a reclining duck with an upright head and perky tail. The surface is smooth, with drilled recesses marking the eyes, wings, and tail, features that likely once held contrasting inlays, now lost. The rendering is minimalist yet expressive, reflecting both artistic refinement and symbolic intent.
This object functioned as a counterweight mounted atop the shaft of an atlatl. This throwing tool increases the speed and distance of a projectile by extending the user’s arm and leveraging momentum. The counterbalance added mass and stability to the tool, improving control and dampening vibration during use. In addition to its practical purpose, such carved figures often carried symbolic or talismanic significance, ducks, in particular, may have referenced ecological or cosmological beliefs in Chancay culture.
