This fine, light roundel features decorative concentric ridges around a domed nipple. Such individual pieces would originally attach to a leather cuirass by means of the attachment hole and integrated loop at the rear.  This protective leather and metallic armor was lightweight and therefore ideal for moveable battle and can be stylistically paralleled with the bronze breastplates that date to the southern European late bronze/early iron age.

Published: H. Born and S. Hansen, Helme und Waffen Alteuropas: Sammlung Axel Guttmann, IX, Mainz, 2001, pp. 89-90, and 277, pl. 72 (AG 1127).

Condition:   Small stabilized hairline crack, minor patina loss to the central nipple and flaking to the edge that does not detract, with exceptional green patina and in excellent condition overall. With museum-quality custom mount.  A superb example!

Dimensions: Height: 14.4 cm (5 1/2 inches), Width: 14.4 cm (5 1/2 inches)

Provenance:  Ex Axel Guttmann collection, Berlin, collection sticker (AG 1127) applied on back.
