A contemporary 18k yellow gold ring featuring a Roman quartzite marriage intaglio depicting opposed male and female busts, the male bearded, and the female with a hair chignon, dating from the 2nd- 3rd century CE.  In Roman times, this gemstone would originally have been set in a marriage ring. Such rings were worn symbolically on the third finger of the left hand, as it still is today, because the Romans believed that a nerve ran from this finger directly to the heart.

Condition: Intact and in excellent condition overall.

Dimensions: US ring size: 9 1/4 (UK = S 1/4)

Provenance: Private NYC collection, acquired from the trade, previously in a private UK collection.
