Finely carved, the base of this green glazed scaraboid features the unique sign sequence known as the ‘anra formula’. The ‘anra formula’, is a group of hieroglyphs that always includes at least two letters of the series a-n-r-a in a line. Although a clear explanation for the anra formula still cannot be furnished, various scholars have theorized it means ‘the gift of Re’, the ‘protection by Ra’, and the ‘name of Ra’. They think such scarabs were used as amulets for magical protection, similar to the ‘abracadabra’ magic words that existed in later Egyptian texts.

Condition:  Wear to the upper surface of the scaraboid, otherwise intact and in very good condition overall with very nicely carved glyphs.

Dimensions: Length: 1.9 cm (3/4 inch)

Provenance: John N. Winnie, Jr. collection, Georgia, acquired in the 1980s-90s, thereafter private CT collection, thereafter private NYC collection.
