Flinders Petrie had a special interest in the manufacture of glass in Egypt, and, for this reason, he brought back a large number of items, which were presented to various museum collections. Of this quantity, less than 9% are 18th Dynasty tiny eye beads. These beads were manufactured by impressing the eye decoration on the flattened section of the beads’ round matrix ( Xia, Nai. Ancient Egyptian Beads (p. 154, GD34– 35). Within the Petrie museum, all flattened eye bead examples show an applied stratification of either a red (eye) white (ring), and blue (base), usually upon a white matrix or, such as this example, a yellow matrix, a black eye on a white ring. These standards no doubt held special significance to the Egyptians.
