This lovely pendant of high karat gold perfectly illustrates the change in jewelry style that occurred during the second century BCE. Though handled with great finesse, gold now becomes the backdrop for displaying precious stones, such as the garnet in this example. Garnets were much cherished in ancient times for their color and their amuletic powers. The design of this pendant relies on striking contrasts in color and surface ornamentation. Here, the pendant is designed as a stylized petal, with hollow sides and base plate, the front with a circle of granulation that further highlights a centrally placed cabochon garnet in a gold border. There is further granulation that borders the outside edge at the front, and two assembled clusters of three grains above and below the garnet complete the design. The suspension loop connected above is composed of a wide, ribbed tubular element mounted horizontally. The base plate at the back of the pendant is also decorated but more simply, where a zigzag line runs vertically from top to tip.

Condition:  Intact and in very good condition overall.

Dimensions: Length: 0.86 inches (2.2 cm). Now mounted on a modern 20-inch chain necklace of 14K gold.

Provenance: Vernon Pick (1903 - 1986) private collection assembled in Switzerland in the late 1950s and then by descent to Pick's nephew, J. Hanson, Minnesota.
