A Greek Xenonware Olpe, ca. 4th century BCE
This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $60 if shipping internationally.
Unusually large for the type, this lovely olpe has a gently rounded form with a flat base, short neck, round flared rim, and small handle. The body is decorated in registers of reddish-orange pigment consisting of vertical dashes, meanders, and waves.
Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, so named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matt red decoration over black glaze. Miniature vases, perhaps toys or votives, are especially prevalent among this type of pottery.
Medium: Clay
Dimensions: Height: 3 1/4 inches (8 cm)
Condition: Some minor flakes to the rim that do not detract, otherwise intact and in excellent condition overall. Traces of the original makers fingerprint can be found below the handle.
Provenance: A.V. private collection, Virginia, acquired from the Brussels trade in the 1980s. Accompanied by the original certificate issued with the sale.
