A transluscent purple amethyst bead with spots of darker opaque purple. It has been mounted on a modern 14K gold and diamond bail and strung on an 18K gold chain.
During the Middle Kingdom, amethyst reached a peak of popularity and was primarily used as a gemstone in items of jewelry. As remarked by Petrie, amethyst beads are one of the characteristics of the XIIth Dynasty.
“A few are known in Predynastic times, and occasionally an amulet, a scarab, or a bead may be of the Old Kingdom, or the XVIIIth Dynasty, but no string of amethyst beads is known outside of the XIIth Dynasty until the very different style of the Roman times”.
Medium: Amethyst, gold, diamond
Dimensions: Bead length: 3/8 inch (0.95 cm). Overall drop length: 3/4 inch (1.9 cm). Strung on an 18-inch adjustable chain.
Condition: The bead is intact and in excellent condition overall.
Provenance: Accessioned by the Edinburgh Museum of Art and Industries in 1921 and sold by Tetragon, London, 1997, to Egyptologist Geoffrey Metz, Sweden.
