of azure-glazed faience, a fine Eye of Horus (wedjat-eye) amulet with incised brow and detail, with a contrasting pupil of dark pigment in raised relief. The amulet has been set into a vintage 14K yellow gold swivel ring with braided detail on the shoulders.
During his contentions with his uncle Seth, Horus is said to have lost his left eye, although later, the goddess Hathor was able to restore it. The udjat or wedjat eye, therefore, came to symbolize the general process of "making whole" and healing. One of the most popular amulets, it also served as a metaphor for protection (against the evil eye), strength, and perfection.
Medium: Faience, gold
Dimensions: US ring size: 7. Amulet length: 5/8 inch (1.7 cm)
Condition: The amulet is intact and in excellent condition overall.
Provenance: Private California collection, acquired in the 1970s.
