RV2401
A finely cast Roman bronze spout from a situla — a ceremonial or utilitarian vessel — terminating in a stylized lion’s head. The lion is rendered in high relief with a dramatic, open mouth through which liquid would have flowed. Deep incised lines highlight the mane, brows, and contours of the face, creating a dynamic sense of motion and power. This expressive form served both a decorative and symbolic function: in Roman visual culture, lions conveyed strength, guardianship, and dominion, making them popular motifs on luxury vessels used in both banqueting and ritual contexts. The triangular back flange with a recessed socket suggests it was once mounted flush to the vessel’s body, allowing for a practical yet visually commanding design.
Medium: Bronze
Dimensions: Height: 2 3/4 inches (6.9 cm), Width: 2 3/4 inches (8 cm), Length: 2 inches (5 cm). Presented on a museum-quality custom mount.
Condition: Excellent for type. Minor encrustation and losses typical of age. The spout channel is partially preserved; the overall form remains intact and well-articulated. The surface exhibits a rich olive green and brown patina, with minor accretions from burial. The detailing remains strong, especially around the mouth and brow.
Provenance: Raymond A. Davis (1931 - 2018), California, private collection, acquired between 1980 to 2005.
