A Pair of Egyptian Bronze weights, New Kingdom, ca. 1550 - 1069 BCE
This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $75 if shipping internationally.
This pair of solid bronze weights is circular in form, each with a convex domed top and gently sloping sides tapering toward a flat base. Their shape and mass correlate to the Egyptian qedet weight standard of 9.5 grams, a system widely used for measuring precious materials and commodities during the New Kingdom.
Medium: Bronze
Dimensions: Diameter: 7/8 inch (2.2 cm), Height: 3/8 inch (1.5 cm), Weight: 46.8g or 5.14 qedet (at 9.1g/qdt)
Condition: Both weights are intact and well preserved, with heavy blue-green patination consistent with ancient bronze. One weight appears to bear an inscription on the base, likely indicating a unit of measure. The second may also be inscribed, though any marking is presently obscured by patination.
Provenance: Private collection of Geoffrey Metz, Egyptologist, Sweden. Acquired from Tetragon, London in 1998. One weight with possible Egyptian unit of measure marked on base.
