A graceful and remarkably well-preserved wooden figure of an Egyptian dignitary, carved with quiet dignity and balance. The man stands upright with one arm at his side and the other, now lost, once raised in an attitude of respect or offering. His features are finely rendered: high cheekbones, almond eyes, and a calm, assured expression that reflects the self-possession of a nobleman. The slender body and subtle contouring of the chest and abdomen show the sculptor’s sensitivity to natural form, while the closely-cropped wig and wraparound kilt retain the elegant simplicity of this period.  Tenons below the feet originally secured the standing figure to a separately made base, ensuring it could be displayed, thus emphasizing the figure's importance.

As was customary in ancient Egyptian sculpture, the head, torso, and legs were carved together from one piece of wood, while the arms and the front portion of the feet were added separately and fitted into place with dowels. One feature that makes this statue particularly rare is the parallel positioning of the feet.  Although a radiocarbon test dates this figure to the early Late Period, the minimalist yet refined style places it firmly in the Middle Kingdom. The wood provides the sculpture with organic warmth, and while the piece shows signs of age, its proportions and craftsmanship remain exceptional.  This statue serves as a lasting testament to the individual's social and professional significance within the Egyptian elite.

Medium:  Cedar Wood

Dimensions:  Overall height: 9 1/2 inches (24.13 cm)

Condition:  The statue is in overall very good condition, with a few minor imperfections. The left forearm is missing, and the right arm is cracked at the back of the shoulder joint.  Additionally, there is a loss to the front portion of both feet, and a gouge to the lower back. A tiny chip is visible on the tip of the nose, though this does not detract from the figure's overall integrity. Despite these small losses, the statue remains largely intact and retains its original craftsmanship. The piece is a beautiful example of ancient Egyptian sculpture, and is presented on a vintage wood base that further adds to its historical charm.

Provenance:  Collection of Steward J. Kennedy (1925-2015), acquired from the London Art Market, 1972, thereafter a private NYC collection, acquired from the NY trade in 2018.  Accompanied by a radiocarbon test result from CIRAM, NY that confirms the statue is ancient.
