A compact granite pounding and grinding stone of irregularly rounded form, worn smooth through repeated use. The dense, speckled fabric and evenly abraded surface are consistent with tools used to work hard materials.

Stone implements of this type were essential to Egyptian industry, particularly during the Old Kingdom, when pounders were used to shape and dress granite and other hard stones. They served in a range of practical applications, from rough stoneworking and surface preparation to the crushing of materials for plaster and paint.

Their durability and simplicity made them indispensable across both workshop and construction environments. While modest in appearance, objects such as this underpin the technological processes behind Egypt’s most ambitious architectural achievements. The present example is notable for its well-preserved surface.
