An Ica-Tiahuanaco Polychrome Bowl, ca. 1000 - 1200 CE
This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $75 if shipping internationally.
A finely executed Ica–Tiahuanaco carinated ceramic bowl with a rounded base, high-angled shoulders, and a wide mouth bordered by an everted rim. The vessel is richly adorned with intricate polychrome decoration in a palette of red, black, cream, and tan. The central register features repeating rectangular panels with stylized birds in profile, alternating in light and dark tones and framed by stepped motifs suggestive of architectural or symbolic Andean patterns.
Above, the short neck is encircled by a band of fine geometric ornamentation, while the lower body features three registers: a row of cream dots on dark ground, a band of cream “T” motifs on red, and a mirrored frieze of black geometric motifs on cream, echoing the neck decoration. The symmetrical layout and refined brushwork reflect both Ica ceramic tradition and Tiahuanaco iconographic influence, suggesting cultural overlap or trade between highland and coastal regions.
