Maya Sandstone Seated Deity Figure, ca. 200 - 500 CE
This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $75 if shipping internationally.
A compact and well-carved Maya sandstone figure of a seated deity, shown seated with legs drawn up and arms bent, the hands resting at the hips. The arms are fully cut away from the torso, creating open negative spaces at either side and giving the figure a strong, sculptural presence.
The torso is pierced by a large, centrally placed drilled cavity at the chest, tapering inward with a smooth interior surface. This feature is executed with precision and stands out as an uncommon element within this class of small-scale Maya stone figures. The figure wears a paneled loincloth with incised divisions at the front and simple bracelets. The head is surmounted by a striated headdress with a defined central crest and flanking volumes. The face is broad and expressive, with clearly articulated features. A large perforated ear ornament remains on the right side; the left is now missing.
The reverse is fully worked and plain, consistent with a figure intended to be viewed in the round. The surface retains an even, aged patina, with wear concentrated on exposed high points, more pronounced on the left side. An appealing and relatively rare example, notable for its strong form, clear carving, and the distinctive drilled chest cavity.
