A Late Roman high-karat gold finger ring with a tapering shank expanding to broad shoulders, each engraved with stylized foliate ornamentation. The raised bezel is set with a large oval cabochon natural ruby of rich reddish-purple color, securely mounted within a protective gold setting. The ring is exceptionally well preserved, retaining crisp engraved decoration and a rich gold surface. It remains structurally sound and suitable for wear.

During the Late Roman period, gold jewelry became increasingly bold in scale and craftsmanship, reflecting the wealth and status of the Empire's elite. Gem-set rings served not only as personal adornment but also as visible symbols of rank and prosperity. Rubies were among the most prized gemstones of antiquity, imported through long-distance trade networks from South Asia. Their rarity, vivid color, and durability made them especially desirable among affluent Roman patrons. The substantial bezel of this example both protected the gemstone and emphasized its visual prominence, illustrating the refined goldsmithing of the Late Roman period.
