An Egyptian pointed-base alabastron, New Kingdom, ca. 1570 - 1070
This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $75 if shipping internationally.
This finely carved Egyptian alabastron exemplifies a vessel form widely used during the New Kingdom for storing precious oils, unguents, and cosmetics. The body is elongated and tapering, terminating in a pointed base intended for placement in sand or a stand. The short, slightly flared neck and narrow mouth are consistent with vessels designed to control the dispensing of valuable contents.
Carved from translucent calcite alabaster, the surface displays soft tonal gradations ranging from pale cream to warm honey, characteristic of the material favored in elite and ritual contexts. The stone’s natural translucency would have enhanced the vessel’s visual appeal when illuminated, reinforcing its association with luxury and refinement. Minor inclusions and surface irregularities are consistent with ancient workmanship and material choice.
