Der Widder, der in vielen antiken Gesellschaften eine herausragende Rolle spielt, ist seit langem ein Symbol für Stärke, Entschlossenheit, Tatkraft, Initiative und Führung. Für die Griechen galt der Widderkopf als Symbol des Glücks und wurde in der Römerzeit nach der Eroberung Ägyptens durch Rom mit dem ägyptischen Hochgott Amun gleichgesetzt. Jupiter Ammon, eine der vielen Versionen von Jupiter, wurde entweder in Form eines Widders oder als Mensch mit einem Widderkopf dargestellt (Herod. lc; Strab. xvii. S. 812).
