GP2207
This elegant vessel was specifically used for decanting diluted wine into drinking vessels. Large and impressive, the vessel stands on a low-ring base, and has a high-ribbon handle applied to a graceful tapering body that is glazed black. The elongated trefoil lip allowed the wine to be poured from both left and right without changing grip or position, thus allowing a hetaera to serve wine at a symposium where banqueters were reclining on a single couch but in opposite directions.
Dimensions: Height: 10 3/4 inches (23.3 cm)
Condition: The vessel is complete, the handle with partial restoration and repairs, the body with minor asethetic surface repairs and light cosmetic overpainting where required, otherwise the vessel is in very good condition overall. A lovely example.
Provenance: Private NJ collection, acquired 1950s - 1960s, then by descent.
