A finely painted miniature amphora attributed to the Attic vase-painter conventionally known as the Affecter, an Athenian artist active during the later sixth century BCE. Despite the somewhat pejorative implication of his modern name, the Affecter was an accomplished and highly distinctive painter, recognized for his mannered, often deliberately stately figures and particularly precise treatment of costume, anatomy, and ornamental detail.
The obverse depicts a bearded elder seated to the right, enveloped in a long garment and holding a branching spray. Before him stands a dancer wearing an ankle-length garment with draped sleeves. On the reverse, a satyr pursues a maenad, placing the scene within the Dionysiac world of wine, music, dance, and ecstatic celebration. Added red enriches details of the figures and garments, while finely incised lines articulate the drapery, hair, and anatomy.
Despite its diminutive scale, the vessel follows the established Attic amphora form, with a heavy rolled rim, paired vertical handles, an ovoid body, and a distinct foot. The compact composition and careful attention to detail reflect the Affecter's distinctive approach to black-figure vase painting.
