This brilliant blue amulet, with details in black, represents the powerful Sekhmet, the lion-headed goddess of war and healing. Here, she wears a long, close-fitting dress and tripartite wig, seated on an open-worked throne with integrated base. With her right hand, she holds a sistrum (a musical instrument like a rattle) that is topped by a double ba-bird. Her other hand clenches a papyrus-scepter that symbolizes regeneration and life. Each side of the throne depicts, in openwork, two rampant figures of the primordial snake god Nehebkau who is linked with magical spells for protection. The loop at the top of the amulet was meant for suspension. The Egyptians believed that amulets like this one evoked the power of the goddess and put the wearer under her protection.

Medium: Faience

Dimensions: Height: 2 1/8 inches (5.5 cm)

Condition: Wear to the glaze at the back of the throne but otherwise intact and in excellent condition overall. A very fine example.

Provenance: Private collection of Jerome M. Eisenberg (1930 - 2022), New York, acquired Philipps, London, 12/93, thereafter private Virginia collection acquired from Royal Athena Galleries in 2014.
