finely carved green glazed steatite with the incised cartouche of "Nubkaure" -- the prenomen of Amenemhat II, that reads: "Nubkaure, beloved of Sobek, lord of Sumenu." Sumenu or Smenu, was an ancient Egyptian town located a few miles south of western Thebes. It housed the most prominent early Middle Kingdom sanctuary of the crocodile-god Sobek.

Medium: Glazed Steatite 

Dimensions: Height: 3/4 inch (2 cm)

Condition:  Tiny chip to the top but otherwise the seal is intact and in excellent condition overall.  

Provenance: Richard Yeagle private collection, mid west USA, acquired in the 1940’s and then decent to his son.  Thereafter, private Virginia collection.
