This fine early blackware frog vessel features the crouching amphibian in an upright position with large open eyes, tapered snout, and thin wide mouth, a stirrup spout at the back.
The Moche were unique among Andean cultures in their ability to portray the world around them realistically. Although their subject matter can be esoteric, including anthropomorphic demon creatures and deities, there was clearly a genre of realistic representations of animals, fish, birds and plant forms, as well as scenes of daily life on painted vessels. Here, a realistic frog is presented, decidedly different from the Moche mythological “botanical frog” covered with vegetation, snakes and horns.
