This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $75 if shipping internationally.
This powerful Roman seal ring features an oval bezel engraved in intaglio with a striding harpy, a human-headed bird shown in profile, bearing a bearded male head, a forward-reaching arm holding a small branch, and a feathered body with raised wings and a fanned tail. The image is carved below the surface so it appears in relief when pressed into wax, underscoring the ring’s use as a personal signet. Such rings served both practical and symbolic roles: sealing documents and goods, while also expressing identity, taste, and cultural affiliation.
In Greek mythology, harpies were divine agents of punishment, sent by the gods to enforce their will. Their wings emphasized speed and supernatural reach, reinforcing that the authority of the gods was inescapable. By Roman times, the harpy had evolved into a powerful winged hybrid associated with divine enforcement, representing vigilance, inevitability, and strength. When engraved on a seal ring, such imagery conveyed authority and protection, transforming a mythological being into a potent personal emblem.
The restrained engraving style and solid silver construction are consistent with the Roman Imperial style, where mythological intaglios remained a favored subject for personal adornment and daily use.
