Achaemenid artisans of the Parthian Empire used the iconography of Dionysus the Greek god of wine on many things, including jewelry. This Dionysian influence is evident in this gold element that takes the shape of grape clusters.
Five separate clusters begin at the lower hemisphere of the rounded pendant and taper off as they meet at the bottom axis. This drop, which possibly once belonged to pair of earrings, is an excellent representation of the synthesis of Greek and Near Eastern elements that are indicative of Parthian culture. The grape motif dates back to the third millennium BCE.
