The effigy of a seated man with his knees pulled into his chest, holding a long-billed water bird, his gaze penetrating the viewer with characteristic Moche almond eyes and a serious, flat mouth, wearing a bowl-shaped cap and round ear spools in his large outwardly turned ears. With a stirrup spout attached at the back, the vessel is burnished in shades of ochre, orange, and cream with some remains of black details on the legs. A very charming piece.

Medium: Clay, polychrome

Condition: Areas of strong scattered mineral deposits on the surface. Two small spout rim chips, otherwise intact.

Provenance: Private East coast collection, acquired by the current collection in 11/23/88 from Economos Works of Art, Santa Fe, NM.
