A Chinese Terracotta Tomb Attendant,
Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 - 907 CE

Sale price€2.894,95 EUR

This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $60 if shipping internationally.

The subtleties of the Tang Dynasty painted terracottas represent the best of early Medieval China when Dark Ages worldwide are followed by more light. This charming terracotta tomb attendant figurine represents a mingqi (“spirit deity”) as a court lady-in-waiting, hovering nearby in a tomb to take care of the needs of the deceased. Mold-made with white slip, she is shown standing, holding her hands to her chest, her subtle, pretty face highlighted in red and black pigment, and wearing a high hooded cloak decorated with red-brown circular elements that cover a floor-length dress.

Condition: Overall scattered areas of mineral and surface deposits, small chip to base that does not detract with expected minor paint loss, otherwise intact and in excellent condition overall.

Dimensions: Height: 10 inches (25.4 cm)

Provenance:  Edmund Bourke, MD., private collection, Yonkers, NY, number CH 100.
