This large and powerful wood vampire stake is in the form of a long sword. The hilt is formed on either side by two ornate bronze and gilt dragons, their heads extended and their bodies and tails looping to form a stylized cross. Between them is a bell flower, and below an applied crucifixion scene of gilded bronze. The handle of this stake sword features an applied leather handle of incised stylized roses, symbolizing the cycle of life, death, and rebirth that Vampires resist. On either side of the pommel is the bronze, open-mouthed head of a lion, symbolizing courage, nobility, royalty, strength, stateliness, and valor.

One of the 19th century’s most intriguing mysteries involves manufacturing and selling vampire-slaying kits. These kits included all the essentials necessary to vanquish vampires: stakes, knives, hammers, crucifixes, bibles, and holy water. While the origins of these vampire kits continue to be shrouded in mystery, recent historical evidence suggests that such kits became popular in Western Europe after Bram Stroker published his novel “Dracula” in 1897. Some have speculated that individuals who were superstitious about traveling to Eastern Europe would only embark on the journey if they had a vampire kit with them.
