Forged from a single piece of iron, this knife features a long, slightly curved blade and a tapered handle terminating in a stylized mythological dragon/bird head finial. The head is characterized by a pronounced eye and an elongated, curling beak, the tip of which forms a circular attachment hole. The neck is slightly arched and articulated with incised linear bands, providing a subtle decorative transition between blade and terminal. Knives of this type were everyday implements, typically worn suspended from the belt. The pierced beak or snout likely served as a point of attachment while also enhancing the visual impact of the design.

The knife belongs to the material culture of the Kievan Rus, a polity shaped by the interaction of Slavic populations and Scandinavians known locally as the Varangians (Vikings). From the 9th century onward, these Norse traders and settlers established extensive trade routes linking the Baltic to the Black Sea and Byzantium, facilitating the exchange of goods, styles, and technologies. Within this environment, objects often display a synthesis of traditions.

The zoomorphic terminal reflects Viking-derived animal ornament, while the overall execution aligns with Eastern European craftsmanship. Animal-headed terminals are a recurring motif across the Viking Age world, often carrying protective or symbolic associations. The ambiguous form, reading as both bird and dragon, reflects the fluidity of early medieval animal art, where creatures are stylized rather than strictly naturalistic. Such imagery may have conveyed ideas of vigilance, protection, or power across both Norse and Slavic traditions.
