During the Third Intermediate Period, hard stone beads of lapis lazuli and carnelian were the most prevalent, both prized for their rarity and allure, and treasured for their matchless beauty, mystical power, symbolism, and worth. The varying proportions of minerals that make up the complex nature of lapis lazuli determine its depth of color. The ancient Egyptian prized it highly, placing it immediately after gold and silver in lists of valuable materials. This lovely example has been strung once more for wearing as a pendant necklace with a modern, adjustable 14K solid white gold chain. This adjustable chain allows you to wear the pendant at its longest length of 22-inches or shorten it to your preference depending on the outfit.

Dimensions: Bead diameter: 8 mm (0.31 inches). Strung on an 18-inch adjustable chain of 18K white gold.

Condition:  Small loss near the drill hole that does not detract, the pendant is otherwise intact and in excellent condition overall.

Provenance:  Dr. John N. Winnie, Jr. collection, Georgia, 1980’s-90’s, private Connecticut connection, thereafter private NYC collection, acquired prior 2015.
