An Egyptian Core-Formed Glass Alabastron, Ptolemaic Period, ca. 3rd - 2nd century BCE

This elegant dark blue glass alabastron is decorated with carefully applied opaque white trails, tooled into neat rows of feathered chevrons that descend gracefully around the body. The form is characteristic of the type, with a long piriform body tapering to a pointed base, narrow cylindrical neck, and flaring disk rim. Two small horizontal lug handles adorn the shoulders. Such vessels were typically used to hold perfumed oils and cosmetics, treasured both for their contents and their fine craftsmanship.
