A small, wheel-thrown pottery dish with a shallow, rounded bowl, inward-curving rim, and short ring foot. Its compact, carefully balanced form is characteristic of the undecorated black-glazed tableware produced throughout the Greek world during the Classical period. The vessel was covered with a refined clay slip that acquired its glossy black appearance through controlled firing, a technique that allowed potters to create elegant tableware without painted or figural decoration.
The precise ancient function of these small vessels remains uncertain. They became known as “salt dishes” or “saltcellars” in the 18th century because their form resembled contemporary vessels used to serve salt. The term is therefore conventional rather than a secure identification of their original purpose. Examples of varying sizes may have been used at the table for salt, spices, condiments, sauces, or other small portions of food. Their simple form, modest scale, and practical design reflect the importance placed on well-made ceramic tableware in Greek domestic and dining culture.
Medium: Clay
Dimensions: Height: 1 inch (2.5 cm), Diameter: 2 1/2 inches (6.35 cm)
Condition: Intact and in very good condition overall. Scattered losses and abrasions to the black-glazed surface, particularly around the rim and exterior walls, exposing areas of the underlying reddish-buff clay. The black glaze is more substantially preserved within the interior. Minor surface deposits and wear consistent with age.
Provenance: Private Maryland collection of a diplomat, acquired between 1960-1980 and then by descent.
