Wandjina Figure on Bark Panel,
Kimberley Region, Western Australia
mid 20th century
Artist: Unknown
Painted on a vertical bark panel, this work presents a stylized Wandjina figure rendered in a restrained palette of ochre red, white, black, and yellow. There is decorative banding at the upper and lower edges of the painting that incorporates repeating geometric motifs, anchoring the composition and echoing broader Kimberley design traditions. The figure is shown frontally, with the characteristic halo-like headdress framing a simplified, mask-like face with dotted eyes and a prominent nose. The body is articulated by fine linear striations, suggesting rainfall or flowing energy, and terminates in simplified hands and a central oval motif at the torso. The absence of a mouth, typical of Wandjina imagery, is central to their meaning. In traditional understanding, Wandjina are not speaking beings, and therefore do not require mouths. There is also a broader belief that if they were depicted with mouths, their power to bring rain could become overwhelming.
Wandjina figures are among the most important ancestral beings in the traditions of the Kimberley region. They are closely associated with the creation of the landscape and, in particular, with rain and water. Rather than being distant mythological figures, Wandjina are considered continuing spirits tied to specific sites, especially rock shelters and water sources. Traditionally painted in sheltered rock sites, Wandjina images have long played a role in maintaining and renewing the balance between people, land, and seasonal cycles.
