This intricate chariot harness loop features a U-shaped attachment designed for threading a harness strap. At the top, it is decorated with an openwork bronze disc featuring a striking sunburst design. In the center of the disc is a silver roundel depicting the sun god Helios on both sides, showcasing his distinctive features and flowing hair. A very cool and unique piece.
Roman chariots played a crucial role in Roman society and culture, serving both military and entertainment purposes. These lightweight carts, made of wood and leather, typically had either two or four wheels and were designed for speed. The two most common types of chariots were the biga, which was pulled by two horses, and the quadriga, which was drawn by four.
Chariots were initially used in warfare but eventually became a popular form of entertainment through chariot racing. These races took place in the Circus Maximus, a large venue for public events. Chariot races were a significant aspect of Roman society and remained popular until the decline of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. The races garnered such enthusiasm that even the elite of Rome would discuss the teams at dinner tables.
