This large pottery dish has a deep bowl shape, sloping sides and a base foot-ring. The interior is decorated with a large scaled fish between a sgraffito pattern, perhaps representing a water.
The bowl is covered with marine encrustation on the base and sides, a result of long-term submergence in saltwater. This indicates that it was part of overseas trade. The marine encrustation on the body suggests the bowl was part of a shipwreck before reaching its final destination and was later retrieved from the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea.
Medium: Clay
Dimensions: Diameter: 10 1/2 inches (26.67 cm)
Condition: The bowl is intact and in overall very good condition, with marine encrustation on the surface as noted.
Provenance: Private NYC collection. Ex. Fortuna Fine Arts, NYC
