Hand-carved from fiery carnelian and polished to a soft, smooth sheen over 3500 years ago by the ancient Egyptians, this rhombus bead emotes power, courage, healing, protection, and balance between passion and serenity. It as been modern set as a drop pendant with a 14-karat yellow gold tapered bail with a round .02-ct. diamond (I1 clarity/G, H color) and strung on an adjustable 18-inch chain of 18K yellow gold.

Carnelian crystals such as this example were immensely popular in Ancient Egypt and considered one of the six most prized. Closely connected to the sun god, Re, carnelian was a stone often used in jewellery as it was believed it was endowed with magical powers, providing energy, dynamism, power.

Condition: The bead is intact and in excellent condition.

Provenance: Sir Christopher Cockerell (1910 - 1999) collection, whose father was Sir Sydney Cockerell, Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum from 1908 - 1937.
